The University of Minnesota and head football coach PJ Fleck have agreed to an amended contract, the school announced Friday. Fleck’s new contract includes an expanded salary pool for assistant coaches, as well as a new annual bonus. The deal is pending Board of Regents approval. Entering his seventh season as coach, Fleck ranks 5th all-time in Gophers’ history for total wins and conference wins, and also 3rd in program history for winning percentage. Minnesota finished 6-7 last season, beating Bowling Green in the Quick Lane Bowl.
The Timberwolves are on a two-game losing streak after an 89-88 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Target Center. The Wolves led by 16 in the first quarter before blowing their lead. The Clippers took a three-point lead in the final minute before Anthony Edwards dunked with three seconds left, but Minnesota wasn't able to foul before time expired. Edwards poured in 27 points in the losing effort. The Wolves are percentage points behind the Thunder for first place in the Western Conference at 42-and-19. Minnesota hosts Portland tonight.
Kirill Kaprizov scored a hat trick as the Wild came back to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 at the Xcel Energy Center. Anthony Duclair gave the Sharks a one-goal lead when he scored in the first 30 seconds of the third period, but Kaprizov netted the game-tying goal two minutes later before knocking in the game-winner with under four minutes left in regulation. Freddy Gaudreau also scored in the victory. Minnesota snapped a three-game losing streak. The Wild are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 64 points and a 29-27-and-6 record. Minnesota visits the Coyotes on Thursday.
The Twins played to a 4-4 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays in a Spring Training game at Lee Health Sports Complex. Simeon Woods Richardson pitched two scoreless innings, while Max Kepler roped a two-run home run. The Twins have a split squad doubleheader against the Orioles and Braves today.
