Red Wing Public School District will be looking for some guidance during the new year’s legislative session to help clear up some questions concerning a controversy over the school Mascot.
New Superintendent, Bob Jaszczak, says the Wingers name comes from the city of Red Wing, which derives its name from Chief Red Wing, so it was surprising when one of the 11 tribes in Minnesota objected to it.
Jaszczak says the district has until September 2026 to solve the issue and that the Legislature needs to make clarifications on the state law.
He says there is some cause for optimism, according to the state’s Education Commissioner.
Jaszczak says the process didn’t give Prairie Island an opportunity to provide its opinion on the mascot.
He says they are in favor of Red Wing keeping the Mascot as it is.
