Red Wing Mascot Controversy

Red Wing Public School’s new Superintendent, Bob Jaszczak, will be looking for the next legislative session to clear up the controversy over the school Mascot.

Jaszczak says the district was surprised when they were informed the mascot was on a list to be replaced. He notes the Wingers name comes from the city of Red Wing, which derives its name from Chief Red Wing.

Jaszczak says the Prairie Island Indian Community supports keeping the Wingers as it is but they were not the lone tribe who objected to it.

Jaszczak says the district has until September 2026 to solve the issue and that the Legislature needs to make clarifications on the state law.

A switch of mascots would be very expensive but the Red Wing School Board does not have an estimate of the cost yet.
