Red Wing Juneteenth Celebration

Greg Taylor

Community members are invited to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday, June 19, with a day full of community events.

Amarie Williams, who will be a Junior this fall at Red Wing High School and is a member of the Red Wing's Black Student Union, says the holiday commemorates the day when the last slaves were freed by the Union Army on June 19, 1865.

Daeja Moore, who just graduated Red Wing High School and the former President of the Black Student Union, says there will be a full day of activities starting with a basketball tournament at the YMCA, a historical landmark walk, and from 3 to 7 pm, live music, food, and activities in Central Park.

Organized by Red Wing's Black Student Union and a grassroots community group, all are welcome.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

Due to expected rain, activities will be right across the street from the band shell (Christ Episcopal Church), the basketball tournament will still be going on, and the history walk and talk will be at the Red Wing Public Library.
