Red Wing Area Women's Network Hall of Fame

Greg Taylor

The 2025 inductees into the Red Wing Area Women's Network Hall of Fame were named on March 12th at the St. James Hotel.

The women honored included Nicky Buck, Jill Mehrkens and Clara Lillyblad (posthumously).

Nicky Buck was elected in 2020 to the Red Wing School Board, the first Native American woman to hold a seat. Buck also played a key role in getting the Honoring Dakota Project off the ground. The Project is dedicated to promoting understanding and healing in the Red Wing area.

Jill Mehrkens was recognized for her civic engagement, volunteering and leadership.

She has led the Red Wing Public Schools Foundation, served on the Wacouta Town Board, is a volunteer at Red Wing Area Food Shelf and has had a role coaching women’s softball and basketball.

Clara Lillyblad played a key role of the St. James Hotel, which opened in 1875.

In 1906, Charles Lillyblad bought out his partners to become sole owner. After Charles passed away died in 1932, and Clara was thrust into the role of sole proprietor of the St. James, very rare for that time period.

Since 2007 the Hall of Fame has been held in March, during International Women’s Month, to recognize local women who have made a significant impact to our local community through volunteerism, going above and beyond their daily work, civic activities and mentoring.
