Red Wing Ambulance Issues

Greg Taylor

Red Wing’s new Mayor, Gary Iocco, is hoping to address the city’s ambulance funding problem this year.

Iocco says there’s no simple answers on how to fix the reimbursement policies of the federal government.

He says the city loses money annually, roughly $500,000, and they don’t much in return, inclduing Medicare patients. Most Townships that receive ambulance services from the City of Red Wing do not pay for the service.

Iocco says the primary ambulance service area is 262 square miles, including 36 square miles in Wisconsin.

Red Wing is slated to receive about $138,000 from the state for its ambulance service, which has a negative cash balance of well over $3 million.

In 2024, the legislature passed a bill to provide $24 million in one-time emergency aid for rural EMS, well below the $125 million that many advocates, including area Republicans, were requesting.
