Prairie Island Nuclear Plant Drones Safety

Red Wing Police Chief, Nick Sather, says last weeks sighting of several drones over the nearby Prairie Island Nuclear Plant brought up the issue of what mitigation options are open to local law enforcement and how safe is the plant to some sort of attack.

Sather says he spoke to Xcel energy officals and the Federal Aviation Administration late last week and was surprised to learn there is currently NOT a no-fly zone over the Plant.

Regardless, they assured him the structure was built to withstand a plane crash or explosion.

Sather says the drones sighted last week were too small to carry anything that could cause damage to the plant.

Sather says his talk with the FAA Friday afternoon led to a conversation about the next steps, including whether they will investagate any additional drone sightings, if there are any.

The federal government NOT local law enforcement is in charge of enforcing laws in the skies.
