The Pierce County Emergency Management dispatch center is being flooded with 911 accidental calls.
It's causing backlogs and drawing out response times to actual emergencies. In the past few days, they have taken 211 calls where help wasn't needed.
A recent Android software update is the main root of the problem.
What should you do if it happens to you? DON'T HANG UP.
Their dispatchers need to confirm there is no true emergency.
BE PREPARED to give your name and current location. If you don't answer or simply hang up, they must track you down, taking up resources.
If you want to turn off the Emergency SOS feature on your Android phone, (1) open the settings app, (2) tap "Safety & Emergency", "Emergency SOS", (3) turn off "Use Emergency SOS"
