Pickleball has boomed in popularity in recent years, and local pickleball fans are a little closer to having outdoor courts to play on right here in Red Wing.
Last week, the Red Wing City Council approved applying for a grant to cover roughly $143,000 of the estimated $322,000 necessary to construct a six-court pickleball facility.
In 2021, Colvill Park was identified as the best site for such a facility.
The local pickleball organization who spearheaded the request for courts would be asked to raise approximately $175,000.
Grant awards wouldn't be announced until next summer, and if funding is secured, bids would determine when construction might occur after that.
The City Council also approved Engineering Department time to handle design work and other soft costs in order to be prepared.
