Red Wing Police Chief, Nick Sather, says Wednesday nights sighting of several drones over the nearby nuclear plant will take a little time to figure out exactly why and who was controling them.
He says the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a complaint from the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant Wednesday at 6:32 pm of four to five drones flying around the area of the plant and Lock and Dam #3.
Sather says the Department has been in contact with Xcel and the Nuclear Plant and they will be meeting soon to discuss a drone policy. Although there is NOT a no-fly zone over the plant, he says the operators were breaking the law.
Sather says his talk with the FAA Friday afternoon led to a conversation about the next steps, including whether they will investigate any further sightings?
The federal government NOT local law enforcement has jurisdiction over airspace.
Sather says there was nothing to indicate ANY threat to the public but will provide further updates and he gets them.
