Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan visited Red Wing Thursday to mark the success of the Borealis passenger train.
Flanagan says the Amtrak started the service last May and ridership has already exceeded expectations with nearly 150,000 passengers in the first eight months.
Flanagan says the new route offers people much better options to take a day trip from the Twin Cities to Red Wing and vice versa.
Flanagan was joined by members of the Department of Transportation and Explore Minnesota to discuss the impact on tourism.
Borealis trains depart from St. Paul at midday and Chicago in the late morning.
They are now making additional Minnesota-area stops in Red Wing, Winona, and La Crosse, meaning two trains each day connecting Milwaukee, Columbus, Portage, the Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, and La Crosse.
