Ice on Lake Pepin continues to dwindle with the much warmer conditions in the past week.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District survey team was out on Lake Pepin March 12th taking the fourth, and likely last, ice thickness measurements of the season.
The thickest ice was 18 inches at river miles 768 and 769, between the foot of Lake Pepin and Lake City. River miles 767, 770 and 772 were measured at 17 inches.
The thinnest, 9 inches, was measured at river mile 776 at the foot of Lake Pepin.
There was no ice at river mile 765, 774 and south of mile 776.
The information will be used by the navigation industry to predict when it’s safe to break through the ice and begin the 2025 navigation season.
The U.S. Army Corp has no date announced for further ice measurements as of now.
