The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District survey team was out on Lake Pepin last Thursday, a day late due to Wednesday’s blizzard, taking the third ice thickness measurements of the season.
The thickest ice was 20 inches at river mile 769, between the foot of Lake Pepin and Lake City. River miles 767, 768, 770 and 775 were measured at 19 inches.
The thinnest, 11 inches, was measured at river mile 777 at the foot of Lake Pepin and 12 inches at river mile 774.
The information will be used by the navigation industry to predict when it’s safe to break through the ice and begin the 2025 navigation season.
The next ice measurement will be Wednesday, March 12th.
