Lake Pepin Ice Measurements

Greg Taylor

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District survey team was out on Lake Pepin Wednesday taking the second ice thickness measurements of the season.

The thickest ice is between 22 and 23 inches between river miles 767 and 769, between the foot of Lake Pepin and Lake City.

The thinnest, 9 inches, was measured at river mile 765 at the foot of Lake Pepin and 12 inches at river mile 781.

The information will be used by the navigation industry to predict when it’s safe to break through the ice and begin the 2025 navigation season.

The next ice measurement will be Wednesday, March 5th.
