It’s a sign that spring is near next month, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, are expected to start its annual Lake Pepin ice measurements in mid- February.
The Corps takes ice measurements on Lake Pepin annually to forecast the navigational outlook.
The lake’s ice is the last major barrier for vessels reaching the head of the navigation channel in St. Paul.
Last year, the Corps canceled the readings due to unusually warmer weather conditions resulting in much less ice than normal and ongoing winter maintenance at four locks and dams.
Ice measurements are typically completed weekly until the first tow arrives.
Historically the average date in which navigation is open occurs during the third week of March.
