BASKETBALL: GOODHUE GIRLS STATE CHAMPS!

The Goodhue Wildcats girls basketball team is at the top of the mountain.

Goodhue edged the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers 70-65 at Williams Arena Saturday to win the State Class A championship.

The Wildcats burst out of the starting blocks to an early 9-0 lead and were up 39-29 at the half. Mountain Iron-Buhl cut the lead to 55-52 with 8:24 left. Natalie Thomforde hit a huge three point basket for Goodhue to ignite a 7-0 run to put Goodhue up 62-52. The Rangers answered with a 7-0 run of their own to shave the Goodhue lead to 62-59 but Thomforde hit another big three point basket with three minutes left which started an 8-0 run to put the Wildcats up 70-59. The Rangers scored the final six points over the final 1:23 of the game but it was too little too late.

Gabby Lira led Mountain Iron-Buhl with 24 points.
