The 4th of July holiday weekend will see a rush to lakes and rivers in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Chris Warrington, with the Winona Flotilla, part of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary that primarily serves the Winona, Wabasha and Lake City areas, says to keep water and boating safety in mind over the holiday weekend.
He says boat sober and be considerate of others. Warrington says alcohol and boating don’t mix, and planning to have a designated sober skipper is always a good idea.
Warrington says make sure everyone wears a life jacket and to let someone know where you’re going and when to expect you back.
Warrington says you should also be aware of the weather forecast and water conditions before departing.
Other tips to remember all summer long include, take a boating safety class, carry all safety gear, and use your engine cut-off device.
